Got this as a Christmas gift 2015. At first I felt overwhelmed as I have no plumbing experience and just purchased my first home. SO i called a contractor and he gave me a high price of 200 dollars to install. I said no way, I am book smart so i figured I would give it a shot! I did have to buy the power cord separately, no big deal to me. The biggest part that I felt uncomfortable with was running electric. This is how I got around that problem and had the Insinkerator up in running within an hour and it is so quiet and runs like a champ. What I did was go to home depot or lowes and insinkerator carries an air operated switch. You simply wire your plug to the disposal, plug that plug into the air activated switch and then in turn plug in the switch plug into the receptacle. The button for the switch comes in 3 nice colors, white, stainless, and then brushed aluminum. You can mount the button right there by your sink or as I did right as I open up the cabinet under the sink. Turn on the water, open the cabinet door, press the button, and away she goes!!!!!! Press it again to stop, keep the water running for 15 seconds to flush it out and that is it!!! So, the contractor wanted 200. I did it myself for 60 and that is how much the switch is. I would not dare to run electric without an electrician but anyone can run this air switch and i did the whole install in under an hour!!!!
This was a replacement for the same type Badger 1 disposer. Because this was a replacement job there was not a lot of extra work involved such as installing water lines or an electrical box. I went to the internet and pulled up instructions for installing this unit before I bought it and I would recommend any D.I.Y installers to do this. Maybe I just like the fact that instructions are easier to read on my computer for me. These are my recommendations that I would like to see on shipped units. First, there is a plug in the disposal port for the dishwasher that is not seen, it is buried inside the port line of the disposal and needs to be punched out if you plan to connect to the dishwasher. A yellow tape with notice covering the port would let the D.I.Y. know that it is there should they miss it on the instructions. Also, the unit is not shipped with an electrical plug. No where on the box did it tell me I needed to buy the electrical plug separate or use the electrical plug from the old unit. This is were reading the instructions before buying comes in handy. Also, I could not find a part number for the disposal plug if I did need to buy one. Did I miss it and if I did please make the print bigger for older guys like me. Other than this I found the instructions to be good. With this said I am very satisfied with my Badger 1 unit. My old unit lasted 11 years and if this one does the same I will be very happy.
