A split lock washer is a ring split at one point and bent into a helical shape. This causes the washer to exert a spring force between the nut or other type of fastener to the surface in which its being fastened too. The split ends maintain the washer hard against the surface and the bolt thread hard against the nut thread, creating more friction and resistance to rotation
