The purpose of a rough-in valve is to mix the hot and cold water together to deliver your preferred temperature. The hot and cold water pipes join at this valve where it determines the ratio of hot water to cold. There are many different types of rough-in valves, so be sure to select the correct type for your particular faucet.
Your selection will depend largely on what type of shower or sink trim you will be installing. You are going to want to get matching brands for your valve and trim. For example, you would not want to buy a Delta valve if you are installing it with a Moen faucet, otherwise it will not fit correctly. PlumbersStock carries:
When companies advertise their faucets with features such as scald-protection, it is the rough-in valve that makes this functionality possible. Be sure to consult one of our professionals when you buy a rough-in shower valve to assure yourself that you are purchasing the correct part for your project.
There are three basic connection types:
CxC valves need to be taken apart completely while the body is soldered into place to prevent the o-rings from melting. This action is performed with a high temperature torch. Contractors often prefer to use CxC valves because they trust the soldered joint more than a threaded one & it takes less time. PEX joints are fast but require special tools. IPS valves are much simpler to install, only requiring basic tools.
Most shower rough-in valves come in ½ inch size but there are some types that will come in ¾ inch. These ¾" valves are less common and are intended for high volume body showers or in home spa applications.
Most rough-in valves are available with a feature called service stops or screwdriver stops. This feature allows you to isolate the individual valve and make repairs without turning off water to the whole home or apartment complex. For those who rent out multiplex units, this can be a very important feature in keeping your tenants happy.
