Hi, there! Thank you for asking us with regards to the AY McDonald 6001 stop and waste valve. Typically, stop and waste valves are turned off by accessing the service pipe/meter box and using a meter key. Meter keys mostly are long steel rods with handles and a socket for closing the valve installed deep in the ground (beyond the frost line). There are also short valve keys designed for shallow installations. Sockets come in various shapes like square, slotted, hex, and more. This particular valve comes with a slotted switch which is pretty common. Hope this helps. Thank you and we hope to see you again here at PlumbersStock.com!
