What Is a Water Softener System?

Used in the home to combat hard water, a water-softening unit functions by removing calcium, magnesium, and other minerals from your water supply. Hard water creates a higher risk for limescale deposits. A buildup of these deposits can create problems in your piping, and lower the efficiency of your entire plumbing system.

Limescale can also create damage within household machinery and appliances, so there are more than a few reasons you want only soft water in your piping. Depending on where you live, if the water is not very œhard, then you can easily get away with a salt free water softener. However, in regions with excessively hard water, the buildup of calcium and magnesium can become so excessive that there is a point where it can actually clog up your pipes. You will lose on your energy bills as limescale diminishes your system efficiency because it is a poor conductor of heat. Here is a summary of the issues you want to avoid with hard water:

  • Dry skin
  • Faded clothing
  • Rings in the tub or spots on the shower floor
  • Water spots on faucets
  • And in extreme cases, can lead to appliance failure

Types of Water Softening Systems

There are four different types of water softeners that are commonly used in your home: ion exchange, salt free, reverse osmosis and magnetic. There are single tank and double tank models to consider. The best water softeners will last many years and may need little to no maintenance, besides filling them with salt if your softener requires it.

  • Salt Free Water Softeners -“ This type is the most common you will find. It uses a filter so no chemicals, potassium, or salt are required and it means that the minerals in the water are not affected. If you have severely hardened water, a salt-free unit may not get the job done. Salt free units are sometimes referred to as œdescalers.
  • Ion Exchange -“ This variety exchanges the ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. It removes the ions that can cause hard water and can prolong the use of washing machines and dish washers. However, it is not recommended for drinking water as it does have high sodium levels.
  • Magnetic -“ This type uses magnets in or around the water pipes so that the magnetic field will alter the water. This type does have a huge disadvantage, as the water will return to a hard stage within 48 hours after leaving the magnetic field.
  • Reverse Osmosis -“ This water softener uses pressure to remove impurities through a semi-permeable membrane. This type does remove up to 98% of the impurities, but it will also remove the minerals and nutrients at the same time.
