8 Inch Mechanical Joint No-Access Cap with 2 Inch Tap, Ductile Iron Construction. This particular fitting is a Mechanical Joint No-Access Cap with a 2 inch tap for Ductile Iron Pipe applications. A cap is an important fitting as it is used in order to cap off or end a section of iron pipes. The flange has a 8 inch diameter for use with 8 inch ductile iron pipe. It is very similar to a blind flange in that it has the mounting holes for a secure and strong connection, but this cap has a “mechanical joint connection”. The mechanical joint utilizes a nut and bolt system, and depending on the size of the pipe, there will be more bolts required for a secure connection. It has a No-Access design, meaning that it does not have the center whole which allows liquid/water to flow through the pipeline, however the two inch tap allows for a hole to be "tapped out". A cap is commonly mounted at the end of a pipe system for later expansion if necessary. Ductile Iron Pipe systems are most commonly used in the transportation of potable water.
