Please note that Moen cartridges may have an imbedded nut on them. In removing the nut, you would need a Moen 14272 cartridge retainer removal tool. If what you are trying to uninstall is the Moen 1224, please check the video found on the page mentioned. You can also refer to these instructions. If the Moen 1234 is what you are trying to remove, a video is also provided on the same page. You will need an adjustable plier and a needlenose plier for both.
