Types of Plumbing Pipe

The most common variety of pipe you will find is PVC, which is a type of plastic material. As PVC pipe is very lightweight, it is easy to transport, and it is an excellent choice for many projects. PVC can be used for most applications from potable water to sewage depending on the PVC pipe you purchase. PVC is also very heat resistant as well as resistant to many chemicals.

Copper plumbing pipes are a good choice when it comes to HVAC or hot and cold water applications (supply lines). There are two different types of copper: soft and rigid copper. The copper plumbing pipe used will depend on what type of project you are working on.

  • Soft copper is very flexible and can be used where the pipe needs to be bent and maneuvered in different directions. The soft variety is a little more costly than the alternative. Soft copper pipe requires flare fittings to connect pipes.
  • Rigid copper piping has become a very common selection when it comes to installing water lines. This type of plumbing pipe cannot be bent or manipulated because it is straight and hard. To connect rigid piping, sweat fittings must be used along with solder.

Polyethylene pipe, also referred to as PE pipe or Poly Pipe, is most commonly a black pipe that is used for cold water systems and underground supply lines. PE pipe is made in several different pressure grades (PN grades) to accommodate different pressure needs. The pressure grades are measured by bar measurements that range from 2.5 up to 16. Standard poly pipe has a Psi (Pounds per Square Inch) rating of 100, whereas Tuff Tube has a rating of 200. The fittings are also different, so it is important to do your research and know exactly what plumbing piping you need.

PEX is an abbreviation used for Cross-linked Polyethylene pipe. PEX pipe offers a wide variety of applications. The most common use for PEX is in pipe work systems, but it is used in electrical applications as well as with natural gas. PEX tubing is available in sizes ranging from 1/4-inch to 4 inches.
