Common Problems with Nail Guns

In order to know which corded, cordless, or pneumatic nail gun parts you need for replacement, you must first properly diagnose your issue. When dealing with nail gun issues, you must understand that there are 3 common areas—also known as stress points—that could be affecting its operation: these are the air hose, the gun itself (the body), and the compressor. Follow these instructions to determine what is affecting the performance of your nail gun:

  • Check the Compressor: The very first thing you must check when diagnosing nail gun malfunctions is the compressor itself. This is one of the most commonly broken nail gun parts and is more often than not the reason nail guns stop working. Some symptoms of a broken compressor include gun firing weakly (or not at all) and low-pressure readings on the pressure gauge. Make sure to check oil levels in the compressor, for moisture in the motor itself, and gauge readings when checking the nail gun compressor for issues.
  • Air Hose: If you don’t store your nail gun in a neutral location (i.e. not too dry, not too hot, not too cold, not too wet) your air hose is in danger of cracking and disintegration. That is the way of most rubber hoses. Of course, most do not have easily maintained/reached areas of this type; thus, hoses often go bad within just a couple of years. If the compressor itself is okay, make sure you check for broken valves, cracking or damage on the hose itself, and pressure-tight seals on the connection between hose and gun. Consider hose or valve replacement to fix any of these issues.
  • Gun Body: Another source of problems you may encounter with nail gun parts is rusting to the gun body. If your gun is rusting/breaking on the body itself, chances are you may need an entirely new gun.

Nail jams, on the other hand, are easy to fix and may not require replacement parts to fix. Just remember; when looking for nail jams, make sure to depressurize the chamber and point the barrel of the gun away from you to avoid injury.
