We needed to replace our old Badger 5 which was 10 years old and had completely failed. It had been leaking some for years before that but we wanted to wait until replacement was really needed before replacing it. Since the sink became essentially unusable we had to get it fixed fairly promptly.

Decent instructions made removal/installation fairly straightforward. 1st one installed by the house builder lasted 13 years - it had an integrated power cord (non-removable) and an integrated, threaded drain pipe.

Well I have had an InsinkErator in my home since it was built in 1986. Last month it developed a small leak on the bottom. Time for a new one finally. Purchase a matching new one. When I inspected it I found the upper housing to be made of a plastic material and instead of using screws and locking nuts to assemble the unit, what was done is the assembly screws were just tapped into the thin bottom housing plate. I guess anything to save a few cents. I think this is what in todays busness world is called "Value engineering". Then this is the world we live in now. Where value is more important than quality. thats what folks are looking for in general. I looked at the higher end models and again assembly was quite similar. They only major differences appears to be motor size and larger outer housing(plastic too) to create an air chamber to dampen noise. The disposer was very very easy to installed. the hard part was getting the old one out. Now does it do the job? That would be a big "yes". I have put in foods that were very soft to very hard (bones) and it goes right through them all with ease. Noise; it is not any louder than my old one or any less noisy. Quality, well I have already given my opinion on that subject. Will this new one last as long as my old one? No. So it is inexpensive for a disposer and it does do its job well. It is not built to last very long, so what is in todays comsumer world.
