It is used to direct water to the bath tub and routing the water to the shower head when the diverter is activated. The cup seal is designed to stop water from exiting the tub spout when the diverter is actuated. This is replaced if the tub spout is not diverting the water to the shower head or if there is a leak in the tub spout when the shower is in use.
