As the manufacturer describes it, This potable water expansion tank is used on gas, oil, or electric, direct-fired, residential water heater and hot water storage tank applications to absorb the increased volume of water created by thermal expansion. It also maintains balanced pressure throughout the water supply system by keeping system pressure below the T&P relief valve setting.
Expansion Tanks are generally installed for the specific purpose of accommodating natural expansion and air/volume disbursement in Water Heating Systems. Designed to eliminate "water logging" and to ensure consistent water pressure of a water supply system. This steel diaphragm tank is pre-pressurized and uses a heavy-duty rubber membrane to permanently separate the air and water within the tank to maintain consistent pressure without the loss of air to the water.

Thank you for asking help from the PlumbersStock team. An expansion tank (such as this Watts PLT-5) is used as an overflow for a hot water system. It is a one-way system which means that water can't flow back into the main hot water tank once it gets into the expansion tank. It needs to be drained to be an effective overflow. If your expansion tank is full of water, it is possible that the pre-charge is set too low, allowing the water pressure to “defeat” the diaphragm too easily and letting too much water into the tank. It could also be due to a ruptured diaphragm so there's nothing to keep the water out. If you need further technical assistance, please contact Watts at 1-978-689-606. Hello! Thank you for posting your question here on PlumbersStock concerning the Watts PLT-5 Potable Water Expansion Tank. Yes, improper service or maintenance on this expansion tank can cause property damage, serious bodily injury that may result in death. A professional plumber should check the complete system, including the expansion tank, yearly and more frequently as the system ages. Checking the precharge allows a small quantity of air to escape and can result in an insufficient air charge. Always check the precharge while the tank is isolated and empty of water, and be sure to maintain the proper precharge whenever the tank is inspected.
